Tracy Algar, born in 1971 in Cape Town, has spent significant time in the Overberg region, where the ever-changing skies and expansive, verdant landscapes present ongoing inspiration for her artistic practice. She recently relocated to Graaff-Reinet, turning her focus to documenting the unique interplay of light within the more arid terrain of the Karoo.
Algar works primarily en plein air, though she notes that her approach is independent of historical Impressionist movements. Through her work, she explores the transformation of shapes, patterns, and colours under varying light conditions, preferring small canvases and oil paint as her mediums. This process allows her to map tonal values with expressive brushwork and an restricted palette.
Her principal aim is to capture and convey the dynamic energy of her surroundings directly onto canvas.
Her much-loved imagery offers tangible records of memorable experiences, capturing instances of joy and collective companionship.
