Shelton Hu b 1996 attended the National School of Arts graduating with Distinction in Visual Arts. In 2019 he completed his BA (Fine Arts) (Hons). Thereafter, in 2021 he pursued a Post Graduate Certificate in Senior Phase and Further Education and Teaching (with Distinction).
He participated in 2017 in the China/Africa Conference at the Goethe Institute. in 2018, he received the Robert Hodgins Prize.
He continues to pursue his artistic career whilst teaching at a school in Johannesburg. Hu explores the power of colour and its effect on form in abstraction.
His work references and acknowledges previous art historical practise whilst he merges Chinese cultural symbolism with his lived reality of his South African upbringing and exposure to the African experience.
His artistic statement is both forceful and thought provoking. Colour and texture swirl across his picture plane, punctuated by figurative forms that allow for personally conceived interpretation. Complete visual absorption is created through the swirls of tactile and textural layers.
Hu’s informed academic background has enabled his artistic output to be innovative, trend setting, original and provocative.
