SFISO KA MKAME

Sfiso Ka Mkame b1963 Clermont Kwazulu-Natal employs a method of layering colour planes of oil pastel, scraping through the surfaces to produce rich patterning, emulating African fabric design. He celebrates the power of women and their nurturing role in society.

Zulu cosmology and man’s interdependence with their ancestors is interpreted through colour juxtaposition and design.

The Meeting of the Spirits suggests an ethereal atmosphere with the outward looking faces. There is an appearance they are dancing past one another but their legs are intertwined.

Portrait of a Family describes the nuclear family as an intertwined entity but their eyes do not engage with the viewer.

The figures merge into one another through the interlinking of shape and form with their patterned clothing, extending onto their skin.

Mkame ‘s work features in Museum collections throughout South Africa and in the 10 years 100 artists 2004 ed Bell Roberts amongst other publications
