LUCY STUART CLARK

Lucy Stuart Clark b 1987 Johannesburg. BFA, MPhil ceramicist, teacher, author/ illustrator, her technical prowess enables experimentation and fantasy. She combines form with imaginative, witty imagery and inventive interpretation creating unique functional objects.

Panic of Love portrays suggested unrequited love. A beautiful young woman dreams longingly, resting languidly beside a gentle rolling river. Her arm, hopefully enticing, stretches out towards a grimacing, fierce faced, gold-teethed paramour.  Her love of colour and its combination adds richness to the unfolding story described by her masterful drawing and demands active engagement from the viewer to fully appreciate the unfolding visual narrative.

The delicate handles balancing either side of the urn depict lurking crocodiles, suggest an increasing tension of the ill-fated lovers. A small, inserted but retractable vase fits neatly into the overall structure enabling floral arrangements to soften the impending sense of friction.

The constructed vases are exceptional artworks. Despite their fragile appearance, the functional purpose is not forgotten. Carefully structured inner vases are made to snuggle into the neck, thus enabling free form flower arrangements which enhance and enrich the whole composition.

The imaginative designs of her functional platters add interest and enjoyment and double as both decorative objects as well as providing functional use.
