Josie Hart de Villiers b.1966 Durban lives in Stanford in the Overberg region where a rich variety of flora and vegetation flourish. De Villiers honed her observational skills as a guide at the Grootbos Nature Reserve.
She interprets botanical imagery, such as Lucodendron Coniferum through innovative methodology, combining Polyfilla spread on sandpaper, drawing a burned protea seedpod through the textured paste, delineating shadow and line.
The textural liquidity of the paste enables light to contrast with the dark line, highlighting the brittle edges of the foliage and plant structure.
One of her drawings was selected in the Top 100 Sasol New Signatures 2023.
De Villiers’ experimental artistic innovation, depicting examples of the wide variety of plant life growing in the Overberg Western Cape area, presents botanical art in a new and unconventional way. Fynbos regenerates through the fierce fires that rage through the mountains enabling the dried seed to burst open, creating the continuation of this remarkable life cycle. Her use of a burned Protea seed to recreate a vision of the varied and exquisite flowering plants, combined with the mysteriously textured background enables exciting visionary imagination.
