Anitra Nettleton b.1950, Johannesburg, Emeritus Professor taught at the University of the Witwatersrand for 35 years. An internationally recognized authority on traditional African art and published author, she began creating hand-painted ceramic vases in her retirement. These works feature an array of flowers rendered in vibrant, contrasting colours.
While the cheerful and playful appearance of each vase may suggest a sense of lightness, this belies the meticulous craftsmanship involved: every flower, petal, and stamen is individually constructed, painted, glazed, and then subjected to a complex firing process. The resulting vases are both functional and unique, characterized by their tactile quality and vivid hues. Despite their fragile appearance, they are designed to hold fresh flowers.
Beyond their visual appeal, these joyful pieces convey a deeper message about the fragility of plant life, underscoring the dependence of flowering plants on insects and the threats posed by indiscriminate chemical use and climate change.
Her unique vases have garnered considerable attention from collectors, with one piece acquired for the Collection of the Munich Contemporary Private Art Museum.
