PAULA DUBOIS

Paula Dubois b. 1970, Pretoria holds a BA in Information Design from the University of Pretoria. With a background as a graphic designer, art director, and illustrator, she now resides in the Western Cape. Dubois has participated in numerous group exhibitions and is a co-founder of Salon 104.

Her artistic practice focuses on interpreting natural phenomena and investigating the tangible effects of climate change on the environment. Living near Table Mountain and the ocean continuously inspires her work, with observable changes and degradation of previously unspoiled landscapes informing much of her creative output.

Dubois studies intricate details within kelp beds, employing surface texture, colour, and line to reveal the complexities of marine ecosystems. By exploring the hidden aspects of the ocean, her art encourages both contemplation of the physical world and imaginative engagement through form and colour.

Skilled in abstraction, she often highlights colour, light, and form to produce lyrical interpretations of mountainous terrain. Participation in various artist residencies has enabled her to investigate diverse geographic environments and the shifting effects of light and form on landscape.

Technically proficient in ink—a medium known for its translucence and versatility—Dubois leverages its fluid qualities to evoke water, while also using it to render solid, rock-like surfaces. She frequently experiments with this medium, occasionally incorporating mixed media to achieve her desired visual outcomes. Her decisive artistic approach demonstrates expertise across a variety of materials.

Dubois’s works are included in private collections in South Africa and Europe. She has recently been selected to participate in a Residency at the Cité des Arts in Paris  in September 2025.
