Kristin Ng Yang b. 1970, Zibo, China is a distinguished artist and educator. A graduate of the Beijing Fine Art Academy, she relocated to South Africa in 1999 to pursue English studies. Yang subsequently returned to academia, undertaking an MAFA at the University of Pietermaritzburg, and maintaining an extensive artistic practice.
To commemorate 25 years dedicated to study, teaching, and exhibition in both South Africa and China, Yang presented an anniversary exhibition with an accompanying catalogue at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg in 2024.
Her wide-ranging artistic versatility is reflected in her confident approach to oil painting, drawing, and printmaking. Her charcoal drawings are notable for their energetic line work and nuanced interplay between texture, space, and form.
Yang’s technical expertise informs her innovative methods in printmaking, particularly through her creative use of hand printing. The resulting works are visually distinctive and engaging, with frequent integration of drawing and printmaking to enhance contrast and interest.
Her proficiency with oil paint enables her to explore diverse techniques, from robust impasto to subtle, brushless applications. Yang’s subject matter is expansive, encompassing autobiographical themes, depictions of local communities, explorations of marine life and climate change, and commentary on societal issues such as inter-racial intolerance.
Yang has exhibited regularly in China and South Africa, including participation in the 2019 China/South Africa Exhibition in Cape Town. Her work forms part of numerous public and private collections both locally and internationally.
